A country where it is illegal to be overweight. A nation that skipped an entire day in 2011. A jellyfish that does not age. Oxford University older than the Aztec Empire. The world is full of facts so bizarre they sound invented, yet every single one is documented and real. Simon De Lafronde and Marco Bellinari find them, verify them, and make sure you never look at the world quite the same way again.

Henry VIII approved his fourth marriage after seeing a flattering portrait. When he finally met Anne of Cleves in person, he called her a Flanders mare and spent the next six months trying to get out of it.
Every autumn, a team of artists and builders descends on a village in northern Sweden to construct a hotel from scratch, out of ice. Every spring, it dissolves into the river it came from.
Ed Headrick invented the modern Frisbee. He spent his life throwing them. When he died, he asked to be cremated and pressed into one. His family said yes.
He did not surrender. He did not defect. He did not stop. For twenty-nine years, Hiroo Onoda fought a war that had ended before most of the people reading this were born. The jungle did not break him. The silence did not reach him. And when he finally came out, the world he stepped into had no idea what to do with him.
In a forest in northwestern Poland, roughly 400 pine trees grow with a sharp curve at their base, all bending in the same direction. They were planted around 1930. Nobody left a record of why they look the way they do.
In April 1979, people in the Soviet city of Sverdlovsk began dying of a mysterious illness. The government said it was bad meat. It was not bad meat. What it actually was remained classified for over a decade, and the cover-up required an entire city to lie at once.
Tsutomu Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. He was in Nagasaki on August 9. He survived both blasts, lived through both cities, and spent the rest of his life telling people what that meant.
Iceland has no army. Its population is smaller than Coventry. Between 1958 and 1976 it went to war with the United Kingdom three times over fishing rights. It won all three without firing a shot. Its weapons were wire cutters, diplomatic audacity, and a threat to leave NATO that would have handed the Soviets the entire North Atlantic. Britain had frigates. Iceland had leverage.
U-2 and OXCART spy plane flights from Area 51 accounted for more than half of all UFO reports in the US during the late 1950s and 1960s. Project Blue Book’s actual job was to figure out which UFO sightings were their own classified aircraft. The government chose aliens as a cover story because no official body would ever confirm it. The planes were stranger than the fiction.
