The First Person to Circumnavigate the Globe Was Not Magellan. He Died Halfway Through.
Ferdinand Magellan died on a beach in the Philippines sixteen months before his expedition reached home. The man who actually completed the first circumnavigation of the globe was a Basque sailor named Juan Sebastian Elcano. He received a coat of arms with a globe on it. History gave the credit to a dead man.
