Nikola Tesla, the brilliant Serbian inventor, was cheated by Thomas Edison, robbed of his rightful place in history, and died alone and penniless after losing the War of Currents to the man who had wronged him. The internet loves this story. It appears in memes, documentaries, and school projects the world over. It has inspired a major Hollywood film. Almost none of it is true. The actual history of Tesla and Edison is considerably more interesting than the myth, and considerably less convenient for people who want a simple story of genius versus greed. Let us go through it carefully. > Tesla did not lose to Edison. Tesla won. His alternating current system became the global standard for electricity transmission and remains so today. Every time you plug anything into a wall socket anywhere in the world, you are using Tesla’s system. The man who supposedly lost the War of Currents determined how the entire planet receives its power. That is not a defeat. The War of Currents itself is also considerably more complicated than the popular version. Edison’s real adversary was not Tesla but George Westinghouse, the industrialist who bought Tesla’s AC patents and had the capital and infrastructure to challenge Edison’s DC empire. Tesla was a crucial piece of the puzzle, but the battle was fought primarily between two corporations: Edison’s General Electric and Westinghouse Electric. By 1892, when General Electric was formed through the merger of Edison’s company with Thomson-Houston Electric, Edison himself had already been pushed out and had minimal role in the workings of the company. The narrative of Edison versus Tesla erases Westinghouse almost entirely, which is historically inaccurate and commercially convenient. What about the claim that Edison cheated Tesla out of fifty thousand dollars? This story appears everywhere. The version most commonly repeated holds that Edison promised Tesla a large sum to improve his DC dynamos, Tesla delivered, and Edison laughed it off as an American joke. The problem is that no contemporary documentary evidence supports the specific figure or the specific promise. Tesla wrote in his own biography that meeting Edison was a remarkable experience and described him as “a wonderful man who, without early advantages and scientific training, had accomplished so much.” This is not the language of a man who felt he had been grossly cheated. Tesla did leave Edison’s company over a dispute about compensation, and he did feel undervalued. But the fifty thousand dollar story appears to have grown in the retelling. > The myth that Tesla died in poverty because of Edison is perhaps the most persistent and the most misleading. Tesla made a fortune from his contracts with Westinghouse but lost it all through poor business deals, bad investments, and expenditures on grand experiments that resulted in failure. His financial ruin had nothing to do with Edison. He spent enormous sums on his Wardenclyffe Tower project, a grand vision for wireless power transmission that never worked at commercial scale. He chased ideas that outran the technology of his era and occasionally outran the laws of physics as he understood them. He died in a New York hotel room in 1943, penniless. Edison did not put him there. None of this diminishes Tesla’s genuine achievements, which were extraordinary. His polyphase AC motor was a masterpiece of electrical engineering. His work on radio frequency transmission was decades ahead of its time. The rotating magnetic field principle he developed remains fundamental to how electric motors work today. He was, by any measure, one of the most creative and original scientific minds of the nineteenth century. But he was not a saint, and Edison was not a villain. Edison was a ferociously competitive businessman who fought hard to protect his commercial interests. He did fund experiments to demonstrate the dangers of AC current, including the electrocution of animals. He even supported the use of AC for the electric chair, hoping to associate alternating current with death rather than progress. These were cynical tactics. They were also the tactics of a man who had built an empire and was watching it be dismantled by a superior technology. > Here is the part of the story that almost never gets told. The fight between AC and DC did not end in the nineteenth century. Every server in a modern data centre runs internally on DC. The electricity spends most of its journey as AC, getting converted back and forth several times before it reaches a processor. Each conversion bleeds power as heat. At gigawatt scale, that waste is not a rounding error. The industry is now pushing high-voltage DC distribution directly into data centres. Edison’s system, written off as obsolete in 1893, is quietly making a return in the twenty-first century. History does not resolve neatly into heroes and villains. Tesla and Edison were both brilliant, both difficult, both driven by combinations of genuine vision and personal ambition that are impossible to fully separate. The internet decided that Tesla needed a champion and Edison needed a villain, and it built a myth to fit that need. The actual story is stranger, more human, and considerably more interesting.
