![Oxford University Is Older Than the Aztec Empire](https://econopass.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Oxford-University-Is-Older-Than-the-Aztec-Empire.jpg "Oxford University Is Older Than the Aztec Empire")In 1096, someone in a small English market town began teaching. We do not know their name. We do not know exactly what they taught, or how many students showed up, or whether anyone thought at the time that this was the beginning of something that would still be running nine hundred years later. The earliest surviving record of teaching at Oxford is dated 1096. It is a single reference, almost an aside, in a document about something else entirely.

That same year, the First Crusade was being preached across Europe. William the Conqueror had been dead for nine years. The Domesday Book had been completed a decade earlier. England was still adjusting to Norman rule. And somewhere in the muddy, prosperous market town of Oxford, someone was teaching.

> The Aztec Empire did not exist until 1428. Not in embryonic form, not in early development. It simply did not exist. The city of Tenochtitlan, which would become the Aztec capital, was founded in 1325. The Triple Alliance that created the formal empire, between Tenochtitlan, Texcoco and Tlacopan, was cemented in 1428. By that point, Oxford had been operating for 332 years. **Oxford was already ancient when the Aztecs were just getting started.** When Hernan Cortes arrived in Mexico in 1519 and encountered the full glory of Tenochtitlan, Oxford had been running for more than four centuries.

The reason this fact disorients people is the same reason the Cleopatra timeline disorients them. The brain groups things by geography and culture rather than by time. Oxford is European, medieval, Christian. The Aztec Empire is Mesoamerican, pre-Columbian, a world that existed in parallel before contact. Because they belong to different mental categories, the assumption is that they belong to different eras. They did not. They were genuinely contemporary. Students were sitting examinations in Oxford while the Aztec empire was at its height. The two worlds simply had not met yet.

But here is where it gets better. Let us stay in 1096 and look at what else was happening, because the world Oxford was born into is stranger than you might expect.

> In 1096 the Byzantine Empire was still a going concern, ruling from Constantinople. The Crusaders had not yet reached Jerusalem, they would not until 1099. Genghis Khan had not yet been born, he would not arrive until around 1162. The Black Death was 250 years in the future. The Magna Carta was 119 years away. Notre Dame de Paris had not been built. Neither had Chartres Cathedral. The printing press was 350 years from existing. Shakespeare was 488 years from being born. **Oxford was teaching when all of that was still unimaginable.**

The university that exists today is, in the most literal sense, a medieval institution that never stopped. It did not close during the Black Death, though it lost students and staff. It did not close during the English Civil War, though it became a Royalist garrison. It has been continuously operating through every major event in English history since the Norman Conquest, through the Reformation, the dissolution of the monasteries, the scientific revolution, two world wars, and the invention of the internet, all without once deciding to take a break.

Oxford is also not the oldest university in the world. That distinction belongs to the University of al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco, founded in 859 CE, making it 237 years older than Oxford. The University of Bologna, established in 1088, is the oldest in the Western world. Oxford comes third in continuous operation, and first among English-speaking institutions. It regularly loses the oldest-university argument to Morocco, which is an outcome that surprises most people who raise the question.

> The Oxford legend that King Alfred the Great founded the university in 872 after hosting scholarly debates with monks is almost certainly false. It was invented in the medieval period precisely because universities competed fiercely for prestige, and the older your founding date, the higher your standing. The actual evidence points to 1096. University College, which has been claiming Alfred as its founder for centuries, still has not entirely let the story go. Some institutional mythologies are too useful to abandon, even when everyone knows they are mythologies.

There is one more number worth sitting with. Oxford’s Bodleian Library was founded in 1602. By that point, the Aztec Empire had already been destroyed for 81 years. The library that Oxford built after the Aztecs were gone is itself over four hundred years old and contains 13 million items.

The First Crusade. The Norman Conquest. No printing press, no Black Death, no Shakespeare, no Aztecs, no McDonalds. That is the world Oxford was born into. It has been open ever since.

*The world is stranger than anyone told you. I am just keeping count.*
