Cleopatra lived closer in time to the Moon landing than to the construction of the Great Pyramid.

Read it again if you need to. It is correct, and the numbers are not close.

> The Great Pyramid of Giza was completed around 2560 BCE. Cleopatra was born in 69 BCE and died in 30 BCE. The Apollo 11 Moon landing happened in 1969 CE. The gap between the pyramid and Cleopatra: approximately 2,500 years. The gap between Cleopatra and Neil Armstrong: approximately 2,000 years. Cleopatra is 500 years closer to a man walking on the Moon than she is to the people who built the structure most associated with her civilisation. The pyramids were already ancient history when she was alive. They were tourists attractions, visited by curious Greeks and Romans the way we visit the Colosseum today.

But here is where it gets stranger.

The Pizza Hut that opened in Wichita, Kansas, in 1958 is closer in time to Cleopatra than the Great Pyramid is. So is the first commercial transatlantic flight. So is the invention of the television. The entire 20th century, with its wars and its cinema and its nuclear weapons and its rock and roll, sits closer to Cleopatra on the timeline of human history than the men who quarried and stacked the limestone blocks at Giza.

This is not a trick of phrasing. It is a genuine problem with how the human brain handles ancient history.

> We compress the past. Everything before roughly 500 years ago tends to collapse into a vague category called “the old days,” and within that category, we group things that have no business being grouped. Cleopatra and the pyramid builders lived in different worlds separated by an enormous chasm of time, but because both are “ancient Egypt,” the brain files them together. This is a cognitive convenience that happens to be spectacularly wrong. Ancient Egypt was not one thing. It was a civilisation that lasted for more than three thousand years, longer than the gap between Cleopatra and us. The Old Kingdom, when the pyramids were built, is as distant from Cleopatra as Cleopatra is from us.

Julius Caesar, who famously visited Egypt and met Cleopatra there, was himself a tourist of the ancient world. When Caesar stood before the Great Pyramid, he was further from its construction than we are from Caesar. He was gazing at something that was, by his own cultural standards, impossibly remote. The pyramid that looked ancient to Caesar looked ancient to Cleopatra too. And it looks ancient to us. Three civilisations, spanning nearly four thousand years, all looking at the same structure and thinking: that is very, very old.

Woolly mammoths were still alive when the Great Pyramid was being built. Not in some distant prehistoric fog, but in 2560 BCE, on an island off the coast of Siberia called Wrangel Island, a population of dwarf woolly mammoths persisted until around 1650 BCE. The pyramid builders and the last woolly mammoths were contemporaries. Cleopatra was not.

> There is a further implication that the timeline makes unavoidable. If Cleopatra is closer to us than to the pyramid builders, then everything we think of as “the ancient world” is considerably less unified than we assume. The Romans who conquered Cleopatra’s Egypt thought of the pyramids as ancient monuments from a lost civilisation. The Greeks who preceded the Romans thought the same. Even to the Egyptians of Cleopatra’s era, the Old Kingdom was a mythologised golden age separated from their present by an enormous gulf of time. **Ancient history has its own ancient history.** And most of us have never noticed.

The reason this fact lands so hard when people first encounter it is that it forces a recalibration. It is not just information about Cleopatra. It is information about the scale of human history and about how badly our intuition serves us when we try to navigate it. The brain that is very good at judging distances of a few metres and timescales of a few years is nearly useless when asked to genuinely feel the difference between two thousand years and two thousand five hundred years. Both numbers are just “very long ago.”

They are not the same. The five hundred years between them contain the entire Roman Empire at its height, the rise and fall of the Han Dynasty, the birth of Christianity, and the complete collapse of classical civilisation as it was then known.

The next time someone mentions Cleopatra and the pyramids in the same breath, as if they belong to the same moment in time, you now have the numbers.

She was closer to Pizza Hut. Significantly, yes, the Supreme Pan Pizza as a reference.

If you want to know [who Cleopatra actually was](/cleopatra-was-not-egyptian/)
before you think about when she lived, we already covered that, and the real woman is even more surprising than the timeline.

*The world is stranger than anyone told you. I am just keeping count.*
