U-2 and OXCART spy plane flights from Area 51 accounted for more than half of all UFO reports in the United States during the late 1950s and most of the 1960s. The CIA knew this. And the job of Project Blue Book, the official US government investigation into UFO sightings that ran from 1952 to 1969, was not to investigate alien visitations. It was to figure out which UFO reports were actually sightings of their own classified aircraft, and then work out how to stop that from happening again. The government was not hiding aliens. It was hiding planes. And aliens turned out to be the perfect cover story, because no serious official body was ever going to confirm them. > Area 51 exists. It is located approximately 83 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, on the shore of Groom Lake, a dry salt flat that provides a natural runway of enormous length and exceptional flatness. The site was selected in 1955 by CIA officer Richard Bissell and Lockheed engineer Kelly Johnson, who flew over the Nevada desert looking for a location remote enough to test aircraft that could not be seen from any public road or air corridor. They found it. President Eisenhower approved the addition of the strip to the Nevada Test Site on the same day, and the first test flight took place on August 4, 1955. **For the next six decades, the US government officially denied it existed.** When Area 51 showed up on Google Earth, the government still had not formally acknowledged it. It finally did so in 2013, when the CIA released a 407-page history of the U-2 program in response to a Freedom of Information request filed in 2005. What was actually being tested at Area 51 makes the alien theory look pedestrian by comparison. The U-2 spy plane, developed by Lockheed’s Skunk Works division under the legendary engineer Kelly Johnson, flew at 70,000 feet, far higher than any aircraft then in existence. At that altitude, the plane appeared as a bright silver object moving at extraordinary speed across the sky. Commercial aircraft of the era flew at around 20,000 feet. Military jets struggled to reach 40,000 feet. Something cruising silently at 70,000 feet, reflecting sunlight in a way no known aircraft could, was genuinely unidentifiable to anyone watching from the ground. And the CIA’s response was not to explain it. The response was to let people believe whatever they wanted to believe, because whatever they believed was less damaging than the truth. The U-2 was followed by the A-12 OXCART, a titanium aircraft capable of flying at Mach 3.2, over three times the speed of sound, at 90,000 feet. It remains one of the most extraordinary pieces of engineering ever produced. Lockheed had to source titanium from the Soviet Union to build it, using front companies to avoid detection, because the US did not have sufficient domestic supply. The plane designed to spy on the Soviets was partly built with Soviet materials, purchased covertly from the very country it was meant to photograph. Then came the SR-71 Blackbird, which held the air speed record for a jet aircraft for decades. Then the F-117 Nighthawk, the first operational stealth aircraft, whose angular faceted shape made it nearly invisible to radar and nearly impossible to identify visually as any known type of aircraft. > Every one of these aircraft, flying test missions over the Nevada desert in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, generated UFO reports. The CIA tracked them. The documentation shows intelligence analysts logging civilian sightings and cross-referencing them with test flight schedules. When a sighting matched a U-2 or A-12 flight in time and location, it was quietly classified. When it did not match, it was handed to Project Blue Book and officially investigated, the result almost always being “unidentified.” The irony was structural: the government was investigating UFOs it had itself created, using a public investigation to absorb the interest of people who had seen something real, without ever being able to tell them what they had seen. **The conspiracy was real. The cover-up was real. The aliens were not.** The security measures at Area 51 are genuinely extreme, which has fed the alien theories more than anything else. The base is surrounded by motion sensors, cameras, and armed guards with authority to use lethal force. The airspace above it is permanently restricted. Workers are transported to the site on unmarked aircraft out of Las Vegas, the so-called Janet airlines, which operate under a classified contract and use call signs that do not appear in any public flight database. Employees sign security agreements so stringent that many have gone to their graves without telling their families what they worked on. A man named Bob Lazar claimed in 1989 to have worked on alien spacecraft at a facility near Area 51. His claims have never been verified. His employer records for the period in question do not exist. His educational credentials have not been confirmed. And yet his interview remains one of the most-watched pieces of UFO testimony ever recorded. > The actual history of what happened at Area 51 is a story about what governments do when they need to keep secrets in a democracy, and about the gap between what citizens believe and what officials know. The government chose to let the alien myth grow rather than explain that they were testing aircraft capable of photographing Soviet military installations from altitudes no one thought possible. The alien myth was cheaper than the truth. The truth, in this case, was a titanium aircraft built with Soviet materials, flying at three times the speed of sound, funded by a black budget no congressional committee fully understood, operated by pilots who did not officially exist, over a location that was not on any map. The aliens would have been simpler. Area 51 still operates. New classified aircraft are almost certainly still being tested there. Whatever is flying over the Nevada desert today at speeds and altitudes that defy easy explanation is probably not extraterrestrial. It is probably an aircraft that will be declassified in thirty years, at which point everyone who reported seeing a UFO in 2026 will discover they saw a prototype of something their own government built.
